What is Eucalyptus?

Eucalyptus commonly refers to an evergreen tree native to Australia and Tasmania. Actually, there are over 660 species of trees and shrubs in the genus Eucalyptus as part of the family of Myrtle trees.

The tree most commonly referred to as eucalyptus outside of Australia, the one we use for its beautiful coin-like foliage and scent, is called the blue gum tree (also known as the Australian Fever Tree). Fun fact – it’s also the main food source for adorable Koala bears.

Eucalyptus has been used for centuries by communities of indigenous Australians, Tasmanians, and Torres Strait Islanders who appreciate its medicinal value. While also a valuable source of timber due to its fast-growing nature, eucalyptus trees are mostly prized for their oil which is used in medicines, cleaning supplies, and self-care products.

Eucalyptus oil is anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, and anti-fungal. It’s been shown to reduce inflammation and congestion and help stimulate your immune system. Now that its benefits are widely known, eucalyptus is grown all over the world, from Ethiopia to China.

Benefits of Eucalyptus

You might be thinking, “Okay, but what makes people want to cut off these trees’ branches and hang them up in their showers?” There are so many benefits that come from adding this unique plant to your bathroom.

Relaxing Scent

Much of the magic of eucalyptus comes from its intoxicating scent. The scent of eucalyptus is beneficial for stress relief, helping to melt stress away and reduce anxiety. It’s mildly invigorating but not overbearing, making it perfect for either a morning or evening shower. Many users report feeling refreshed, calm and clearheaded after smelling eucalyptus.

Health Benefits

This aromatic plant is not only great for stress relief which we all know contributes to overall health and well-being – it also actively helps you with respiratory and sinus issues. Its anti-inflammatory properties work to help decongest the upper respiratory system. It can help with conditions like asthma and bronchitis.

Because it helps to reduce inflammation and clear out mucus, it can also help with sinus conditions and infections as well. It is useful for reducing coughing and can provide a great natural alternative to traditional over-the-counter medicines when you are dealing with a cold.

Aesthetics

If nothing else, eucalyptus is beautiful to look at and looks great hanging from your shower! Studies have shown that incorporating nature into our homes and other environments boosts mental clarity and health. Bring nature close to you with eucalyptus shower bundles, and you might feel transported to a beautiful outdoor shower surrounded by plants.

So why the shower and not just in a beautiful vase? There’s science behind that too. What we want from eucalyptus is the volatile oils found in the leaves that evaporate in the air. With the steam of your shower, they are released more quickly and hang around in the air for us to soak in. Between the steam and scent, you can transform your ordinary shower into a spa.

Making a eucalyptus bundle for your shower is simple. Follow these steps to create one.

●      Source your eucalyptus. Feel free also to add any other herbs or flowers you’d like, such as rosemary or chamomile.

●      Prep your eucalyptus. Once you’ve gotten your eucalyptus bundle, you’ll want to trim the end of the stems and remove just a few leaves so you will have room to add twine for hanging.

●      Gently crush the plant. Use an object like a rolling pin or wine bottle to gently crush the leaves. This will help with releasing the scent and oils.

●      Tie together with twine. Tie your eucalyptus stems together with twine, and then use another piece of twine to tie the stems to your shower head.

●      Position correctly. Make sure the stems are close to the flow of water but not directly under it, as this will not be as effective for inhaling.

How Long Does Eucalyptus Last in the Shower?

There’s no agreed-upon best-by date for the eucalyptus bundle in your shower, but the common consensus is to replace it when the scent starts to dissipate. This can be anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks after first adding it to your shower. Since the benefits come from inhaling the scent and volatile oil of the plant, once these have faded, you’ll want to toss (compost!) it or utilize it in a beautiful dried foliage bouquet for decor.

Where to Buy Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is easier to find in some locations than others. That being said, there are a few places most likely to have the eucalyptus you are looking for.

●      Traditional grocery & plant stores. Some traditional grocery stores with floral sections will have eucalyptus stems and bundles available. You can also occasionally find them at big box plant retailers and local garden stores.

●      Etsy. This online marketplace carries eucalyptus too. There are a variety of sellers offering pre-made eucalyptus shower bundles so you can cut out some of the prep work.

●      Independent sellers online. There are many online shops that specialize in natural products and herbs that sell eucalyptus shower bundles. Check out their shipping policies and location before ordering since, ideally, you’d want the freshest plants possible.
